Corfu

Corfu is located on the northern side of the Ionian Sea and is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan islands of Greece. Corfu Town

The legacy  of the cultures that have passed from the island is  clear wherever you look. Corfu town is a perfect example of that.  It is one of the most beautiful, impressive and interesting cities of Greece and was built between two fortresses during the Venetian rule. The town is a maze of narrow streets dominated by the 16th century fortress. Around every corner you can find a chapel, an old mansion or a secret garden square. In 2007 the island’s old city was designated for the UNESCO world heritage list.  Both the fortresses are worth visiting but you shouldn’t miss the excellent Asian Art Museum which contains exquisite collection from Asian countries and is hosted in a building with a very long history. The Achillion palace,  the church of St. Spyridon and the church of the Virgin Antivouniotissa are some of the places that make Corfu stand out.

Corfu Villages

But the city is not the only thing to capture the visitor’s interest. The many villages around the coastline have become popular summer resort. The island has also very picturesque and untouched villages despite the tourist growth of the last 50 years. Sidari, Lakones, Pelekas, Agios Matheos, Strinilas are some of the many villages  that can offer you a true and deeper experience of the island.

Corfu Beaches

With green waters surrounded by lush greenery, beaches  in Corfu attract many visitors every summer Palaiokastritsa is the most famous beach resort while other famous beaches include Barbati, Nissaki, Kalami and Glyfada. Many Corfu beaches are organised and lined up with hotels, seaside restaurants, water sports centres and beach bars. But you can find seclusion even in this popular island. There are number of beaches accessible only by boat, that can offer you the serenity you ask for.

Activities in Corfu

The island offers plenty of activities. Activities like sailing, water skiing and scuba diving are obvious choices, but there plenty others like cricket, golf and tennis. The island is gaining ground in  hiking, cycling and paragliding  for those more adventurous, who want to explore Corfu in a different way.
